The huts were simple, single room affairs with bunk beds and separate bathrooms, but they were very comfortable and palatial by Ugandan standards. Although they were very comfortable, don’t be fooled into thinking we led a pampered existence. We were well looked-after, and our hosts gave generously of their time and energy, providing wonderful meals, washing our clothes, and much more. But some things are well beyond their control. Bugs (like spiders, giant cockroaches and mosquitoes) and geckoes lived right along side us, and we had to learn to cohabitate. Lesson #1: Put your toothbrush in a bag. The cockroaches loved toothpaste.
Fortunately, we never had to contend with bugs like this in our rooms. This big guy seemed happy hanging out in the jack-fruit tree in the courtyard. I think he ate chickens when we weren’t looking.
