We were fortunate enough to witness several special events while in Uganda, and this one was particularly touching: the women’s graduation. The students at the Rehaboth school were on hand to receive their uniforms (made by the wonderful women at AOET’s tailor school) and a pair of new shoes. Many children in Uganda don’t even get shoes until they are well in their teens, but thanks to child sponsors, these kids are a literal step ahead.

Once the shoes were given out, many of the kids had no idea how to tie them, which provided us with a great opportunity to serve them. With everyone suited up, a grand parade was launched --complete with marching band-- and everyone headed to the school to take part in the graduation ceremony for the tailor school. This was an amazing thing to take part in. We walked for several miles, singing and dancing along with the band. It seemed like the entire town showed up for the procession, and the entire way was paved with onlookers.

One of the things that really affected me was how excited the graduates and students were. There was no doubt this was a momentous event for them. I’ve been to so many graduation ceremonies in this country, and most of them put me to sleep. What a contrast. I could feel the excitement!
