The office is located in a residential neighborhood just outside of Jinja. Our first order of business was to upgrade the RAM on all the office machines. The decent Dell Dimension 2350’s were seriously bottlenecked at 256 or 128MB of RAM. We doubled or tripled the memory, then set out to share the director’s Internet connection (128k DSL) with the rest of the office. This allowed the employees to use the Internet without barging into the director’s office. Our team installed Linksys wireless cards in each of the office computers and a Linksys WRT54G access point, which not only allowed them to share the Internet connection, but allowed them to share files and printers. In a wired culture, this doesn’t sound like a big deal, but from what I understand, the office had been using floppy disks and USB sticks to transfer files from computer to computer. Our work on the office will streamline the process of creating and managing child profiles, which will help more children find the sponsors their lives depend on.
I couldn’t resist taking a photo of my PowerBook surfing Google (.co.ug) from the office’s wireless network. Oh, and if you happen to be in Jinja, please be a good hacker and avoid picking on AOET’s wireless network. =)
