The AOET office in Jinja town is impressive. It's a home in a residential neighborhood, but suffers from the problems that plague this area, such as spotty power. When the power drops, I take a deep breath and head out back to chat with my new friend, Dennis. But after two days of diligence and Grace, the office is online! We began with a single 128k DSL line (scorching for this part of the country) that was connected to a single computer in the director's office. Now, the entire office shares the connection thanks to a pile of linksys wireless cards and a WRT54G access point. This was the task my team came to do, and we were blessed to be able to finish in two days, enabling us to start working on other things.
The network setup impressed (and frustrated) me, and I patted myself and my team (Jeff, Dave, Bryan) on the back about it, but it was the functionality of the network was lost on me. The office staff was overjoyed to be able to share a printer, share files and get to the Internet without storming into the director's office. The net is about empowering and enabling the people. Lesson #1 of many for me in Uganda.
